The effectiveness of e-learning modules for educating recreation and fitness professionals on supporting Autistic individuals in physical activity

Jasmin Ezaddoustdar, Lauren Tristani, Rebecca Bassett-Gunter

Physical activity (PA) has the potential to offer physical and mental health benefits to autistic individuals. However, recreation and PA environments generally lack the support necessary to accommodate the PA needs of many autistic people. Recreation and fitness professionals (RFPs) are in a leadership position to support quality recreation and PA participation among autistic individuals, yet there exists a need for disability-specific knowledge among RFPs. Guided by the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), the Multi-Process Action Control (M-PAC) model, and the Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) theory, this study aimed to investigate if an e-learning module is effective and feasible in changing the intention and confidence of RFPs to support autistic individuals in participating in recreation and PA. RFPs (N=49) completed the Strong Minds Through Active Bodies e-learning modules, as well as pre- and post-evaluations. Changes in TPB constructs from pre- to post- engagement in the e-learning module were evaluated. DOI constructs were also evaluated post- e-learning module engagement to consider user experience around feasibility. All TPB constructs were found to improve following e-learning and there was generally positive feedback regarding feasibility. Using e-learning as a strategy appears to be a promising and feasible tool for enhancing the intentions of RFPs to support PA for autistic people.
